Webmaster Tip: Optimize Your Site For Google

September 6th, 2007 posted by · 2 Comments

GoogleA lot of webmasters believe they don’t need to optimize their site for Google, as the spiders will pick up their URL eventually. This is true to an extent, however, optimizing your site to be more Google friendly never hurt anyone. Google’s Webmaster Tools should be your new best friend. Sign up for a Google account and log into their Webmaster Tools panel. From there you can add your site to your profile (you will need to verify you are the actual owner), look at your stats according to Google’s spider, optimize your site for Image Search, create a Sitemap, remove URLs you don’t want associated with your domain (such as your /images directory for example), setup a robots.txt file and a few other neat tweaks.

I optimized this very blog about two weeks ago and I see my search engine traffic has doubled since I’ve done so. Optimizing your site can provide Google with better information on how to crawl it better, and increase your site’s traffic and performance.
