John Chow’s April Fools’ Day Prank Made Me Lose My Work!

April 2nd, 2008 posted by · 7 Comments

UPDATE #1: My lawyer has informed me the legal paperwork has been delivered to Mr. Chow. The wheels are in motion.

UPDATE #2: John decided to make a video on how to get out of a Rick Roll and has agreed to settle for $5,000. Ok, that’s fine I guess. Lawsuit closed.

UPDATE #3: Fooled you. And you thought April Fools’ was over?

Yesterday was April Fools’ Day and like many other bloggers, I didn’t feel the need to make a childish post forwarding people to another site and crashing their browser.

A select few bloggers did feel the need to do this – JohnChow.com and UberAffiliate.com. John made a post, which was completely unoriginal to anyone whose been on the internet at anytime within the last year… he pulled the famous “Rick Roll” prank, which if you’re unfamiliar with, shakes your browser all over the screen, plays a YouTube video of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up, followed by a hundred or so JavaScript pop-ups.

What is this, freakin’ elementary school?! The point is these antics caused my browser to completely crash, making me lose a lengthy post I was working on for next week based around CPA offers. I’m all for pranks and having fun, but when it causes me to lose a piece of work, in which I rely on to make a living, I don’t play nice.

Here are what some of his readers had to say…

Maybe he can use some of that $30,000 a month income he makes to pay his legal bill when it comes his way.

I personally have never seen the humor in practical jokes. People are made to feel likes idiots so other can have a laugh.

I expected as much yesterday and went through my Bloglines Feed Reader pretty fast, ignoring anything that wasn’t the norm.

Unsubscribed from a couple as well.

This post is even more pathetic than John’s RR.

WP has been auto-saving its editor contents for a few versions now, I am pretty sure 2.5 still offers this feature. It is quite unlikely that you “lost” a lengthy post over his RR.

I enjoy a good laugh as much as anyone else, but I really hate that Rick Roll nonsense – too childish IMO.

[…] so did JohnChow. This apparently pissed off a lot of his subscribers / patrons. Chris Jacobson from Money Making Scoop states that he lost some work he was working on because of the javascript popups. John Chow even […]

I agree with Vlad. How could you lose work if WP auto-saves it ever so often? Unless you typed really fast then jumped over to the Rick Roll very quickly…

Either way, it shouldn’t have crashed your browser, unless you manually ended task on it.
