Buy Me a Beer, or a Coffee

September 21st, 2007 posted by · 9 Comments

StarbucksA lot of webmasters are displaying the little PayPal donate buttons lately; more so than before I’ve noticed.  I’ve seen a lot with the tagline, “Blogging isn’t easy… buy me a beer”, along with “Blogging does the body good, so does milk… buy me some please!”  I find these beverage donations to be humourous whenever I see them.  I just can’t help snicker and throw in a few bucks.  Afterall, the website I happen to be reading at the time did provide me with at least a little entertainment. 🙂

A friend of mine who is a big Starbucks fan and does most of his blogging while in one of their establishments sent me an e-mail today.  He wanted to brag about how many donations he had received in the last week.  His site states, “Addicted to caffeine, must refuel to blog more!”.  The default value for his PayPal donation is $3.50.  I knew you could make a little money off of this sort of thing, but when I read his e-mail I was a little shocked.  In one week he made $126.00 in coffee donations.  Neat, huh?  I guess it all adds up after a while.  The funny thing is he usually has only one frozen cappuccino a day, and is using the rest towards his college tuition.  Hey, whatever works!

My question to you is… what do you think about having a PayPal donation button on your site with a smug tagline to go with it?  Yay or nay?  Vote below.

I didn’t realize that many people donated through those things. I am going to have to implement it on my blog@

I’d like to implement it but I really wonder if anyone would donate. But I guess the best way to know is to try putting it up on my site.

There’s a plugin for that? lol
As far as I know you just create a PayPal button from your account and set a pre-set donation amount.

To YC, you’d be surprised how many people will use one of these buttons as a form of showing support for one of their favorite websites.

I believe both john chow and stevepavlina.com are pretty open as to how much revenue these bring in.

I say do what makes you happy! I added a donate now button a few weeks and haven’t got a donation yet! I figured one or two people would have gave a few bucks, maybe it is cause I haven’t added that catchy tag line! I have been looking for a coffee cup donate button and haven’t had luck! Gotta feed the need, help a brother out!
